    Description

    Offered here is an antique June 5, 1943 Chatham County Georgia marriage license for Mr. Luhr C. Beckmann, Jr. and Miss Doris Elise Wise by the Hon. Gordon Saussy - a noted football player and Savannah mayor and lawyer.
    The affixed sheet with the specifics of the couple has a space for "white or colored".
    Measures 11 1/2" X 13" and  3 7/8" X 11 1/2" folded. Will be shipped folded.
    Shows some wear but is overall a very nice representation of a one of a kind period piece.
    "Gordon Saussy
    (February 14, 1872 – December 12, 1952) was an American football player
    and coach and a local politician from Georgia.
    He served as the head coach at the University of Georgia
    for one season in 1899, compiling a record of 2–3–1. Saussy was the Mayor of Savannah, Georgia
    from 1929 to 1931.
    After coaching at Georgia, Saussy returned to Savannah, where he practiced law. He once was a Democratic
    member of the Georgia General Assembly
    and was elected Mayor of Savannah
    in 1929. He resigned in 1931, successfully ran as a candidate for Ordinary of Chatham County, Georgia
    and served in that capacity until his death...
