ere's a savory pebble from the Sierra Nevada Mtns. Frequent Ebay shoppers who followed my store for over fifteen years know I don't sell junk. If you're a true aficionado of gold in it's natural state will appreciate this small chunk of wall rock made of micaceous schist. On one side is a cap of rusty oxidation. On the other is an amazing plate of amber-like, smoky quartz. Right at the interface between the greenstone and quartz is a cool, little zone of high-purity, trigonal gold crystals. Scoping it through a pocket lens reveals a world of natural beauty bound to excite every gold purist amongst us. It's authentic, rare, and thus the extravagant price. I guarantee the gold inclusions are a natural occurrence.

I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold.
Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many vein systems sourcing the immense placer deposits of the Sierra Nevada Mtns, the famed Mother Lode.

IT'S THE JOURNEY THAT COUNTS
Back when I mined California's Trinity River country, suction dredging was still legal and very popular. No moratoriums had yet legislated our favorite mining method out of existence. California, after all, became famous mostly because of the 1849 Gold Rush. It seems only right that small-scale mining (at the very least) be allowed in the state again. Back in the 1980s, small-scale, mechanized mining was practiced extensively throughout the state, so lots of miners lived along the Trinity River in close proximity to the gold deposits which remained. My impression of miners back then put you in mind of a fraternity, a band of brothers, as it were. Our collective
helped one another, partied together, offered logistical support and, in general, got along really well. It always seemed to me, more often than not, most locals not actively involved in mining enjoyed the presence of miners. We poured a considerable amount of capital into the economy and residents overall seemed amenable to the colorful cast of characters gathered there along the river; but that's the kind of community it was i.e. friendly, helpful, honest, and mindful of the state's gold mining traditions. Most miners behaved themselves all the while infusing a bit of old wild west color into the territory. When desperadoes and other unsavory elements slunk into town causing trouble, we had one another's backs. In my book, these social support systems
are worth more than money
.
Without kindness, fellowship, a
willingness to share and to help one another, you're missing out on the best things in life.
