hy do men go searching for gold? Just take a gander at this quartz-metal slug oozing with gold. A guy has to wonder what would possess someone to melt such a beauty down. Yet, in the old days, miners usually did. I suppose, back then, there was no such thing as 'specimen value'. Everything containing gold either had 'melt value' or you couldn't sell it. But that was then, this is now and you must admit, the combination of natural, raw gold and the host rock it forms in make for quite an eye-full. Trust that your metal detector will scream on this slug. My source tells me it's from the Sierra Nevada Mtns., but he wouldn't reveal from where exactly. Can't say as I blame him. I mined gold for eighteen years and know a little something about folks jumping into the honey hole you worked so hard to find.
For those who've been keeping track of my store these past fifteen or so years, you're looking at one of the choicer gold quartz pieces I have to offer. Just so you know, after fees, I'll be lucky to break even.
I don't deal in low grade gold ores. I sell authentic, naturally-occurring, gold quartz specimens with visible gold. These high-grade beauties are hard to find and expensive to obtain. My prices are not based upon the amount of gold contained, but upon the authenticity, rarity and collectibility of these unique specimens.

I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold.
Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many gold-bearing vein systems filling the State of California.

    STORIES FROM THE GOLDFIELDS
    W
ith attempts to find gold, you may wind up with little to show for your efforts but sprains, exhaustion, bruises, blisters, and the appetite of a horse. Prospecting's the perfect calling for those who suffer from insomnia. After a day of prospecting, once you hit the sack, sleep quickly follows. Maybe you'll work your way into better shape, but in the meantime, expect to take a beating. If you didn't know before, you're about to find out what real work really is.
The fact is, a guy can't always load up his ATV or jeep with provisions and cruise down to that favorite honey hole. The good stuff's off the beaten path.
In the past, folks figured that once they went out west, gold was everywhere. It just laid around waiting to be picked up. During the California Gold Rush, massive armies and armadas of 49ers from all over the globe became part of an exodus. People from all around the globe believed the bull about instant riches. Heck, all those poor farmers and shop-keeps could think about was how rich they were before the first pickaxe blow was struck. I imagine, to a man, they expected to hit it big. In truth, very few did.
Unreachable dreams of finding oro grande aside, to the adventurous individual living in today’s weary, unappealing, infectious world, there's a lot more to prospecting for bits of yellow metal than meets the eye. There's tranquility, independence, self-sufficiency, self-esteem. You may even begin to develop a whole new appreciation for nature and the therapeutic value of hard work. There are thrills awaiting in the wilderness you could never put a price tag on.
The rules are simple. Man either learns to survive the basic hardships of the natural elements or he doesn't make it. Having been a digger for eighteen years, there's no way to count how many times I've been skunked, disappointed, and ready to quit.
Most people who leave something else behind to pursue gold quickly learn 'there's no easy ounces' in this business; but while you may not strike it rich, there are far better things in life than money. W
orking in the wide open spaces every day, I came to know utter peace and contentment. Surrounded by
nature and chasing that elusive dream, I imposed my will on life. It was a good decision. The prospector lifestyle fit like a glove. There's no feeling in the world quite like the one you get finding gold in some desolate
place where no one else thought to look.   credit - G. Ralph
